Cloudy or dirty water could inhibit how effective the UV treatment is. The SteriPEN Pre-Filter is a compact water filtration device that removes debris from water so the UV light can effectively destroy the microorganisms in it. 

The thread on the Pre-Filter is common to most types of outdoor hydration brands and products such as Nalgene, Camelbak bottles and MSR Dromedarys
